The third in the True Tales of a Traveller series, this story is called The Long Way Home. At over 17,000 words, the story borders on novella length. Unlike the first two stories of the series, The Long Way Home is set not in one country, but in half-a-dozen. Like the other stories in the series, it provides not only an entertaining read, but also information on all the places visited, some relevant only to the era in which the story is set, and some still relevant today. In addition to being a travel story, The Long Way Home is also a love story, and a story about the unexpected twists and turns that can occur in personal relationships. Difficult trips can be a testing time for any relationship, including relationships between friends and relationships between lovers. Travel has brought together many couples, but it's certainly also torn as many apart. A poorly thought-out plan to travel overland from Athens to London quickly develops into a stressful expedition that quickly has the young man (myself) and his girlfriend at each other's throats! Both discover unattractive aspects of their partner's personality that previously escaped their notice. The kindness of strangers and the unreserved hospitality of distant acquaintances saves the trip from complete disaster, but doesn't seem like enough to save the relationship. And yet the worst of the damage to the relationship seems to occur after the two travellers have both arrived back in the UK. A story for young couples travelling together anywhere.
