This is the journal of a trip over the Andes on dirt roads. Beautiful, rugged, remote -- and seldom visited. The bicycle trip began at Trujillo on the Peruvian coast and ended where the road stopped at Yurimaguas. From there I traveled the Huallaga river by barge to Nauta where a guide met me and brought me to his home in the village of Santa Cruz. We explored the rain forest for five days. I later traveled from Iquitos -- 6 days -- by river barge to the town of Pucalpa on the Ucayali. This is the way the villagers along the Amazon travel between villages and to the major towns along the river.
