The protagonist tells the story of the difficulties faced on the road less travelled and the extraordinary characters they meet along the way together with her evocations of life in China post the Cultural Revolution and the countries bordering the Himalaya in a naive era before extensive tourism was shaped by the computer age that changed the world forever.
