Two American Boys In The French War Trenches
The year was 1918, and the world was engulfed in the horrors of the First World War. Young men from all walks of life left their homes, families, and familiar surroundings to fight on foreign soil. Among them were two brave American boys, John and Robert, who found themselves in the depths of the French war trenches.
The war had taken a toll on both soldiers and civilians alike. The trenches, an eerie and desolate place, were the front lines for both defense and offense. They were muddy, rat-infested, and offered little respite from the chaotic warfare happening above. It was in these trenches that the lives of John and Robert would forever be shaped.
John and Robert were childhood friends, growing up in a small town in Ohio. They had always dreamt of adventure and glory, and when the call to duty came, they eagerly signed up to serve their country. Little did they know the trials and tribulations that awaited them.

Life in the Trenches
The trenches were a harsh reality for anyone who found themselves trapped within their confines. Soldiers had to endure constant shelling, snipers, and the ever-present danger of gas attacks. The cramped living quarters, shared with fellow soldiers, offered little solace from the horrors unfolding outside.
Despite the grim surroundings, John and Robert managed to find solace in each other's company. Their friendship grew stronger with each passing day, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. They shared stories, dreams, and aspirations, reminding each other of the life waiting for them beyond the war.
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and John and Robert became seasoned soldiers. They had witnessed unimaginable horrors, lost comrades, and questioned their purpose in this grand scheme of destruction. Yet, their resolve never wavered.
Acts of Heroism
It was during a particularly fierce battle that John and Robert's courage would be tested. The French trench they were stationed in came under heavy attack, with enemy forces attempting to breach their defenses. The situation seemed dire, and it was up to these two American boys to prevent a catastrophe.
With unwavering determination, John and Robert fought valiantly, repelling wave after wave of enemy soldiers. Their bravery inspired those around them, as they risked their lives to protect their comrades and defend the trench. Their acts of heroism did not go unnoticed.
News of John and Robert's bravery reached higher-ranking officers, who commended their dedication and selflessness. They were honored with medals for their valor and recognized as true heroes. But for John and Robert, the greatest reward was knowing they had made a difference and fought for a cause they believed in.
Return Home
As the war finally came to an end, John and Robert eagerly awaited their return home. They had survived the horrors of the trenches and were ready to embrace the life they had often dreamed of during those long days and nights in the war zone.
Their journey back to Ohio was bittersweet. While they were filled with joy at the thought of reuniting with family and friends, they couldn't help but feel a deep sadness for the lives lost and the destruction witnessed. They arrived home as changed men, forever marked by their experiences in those French war trenches.
Legacy
John and Robert's story is one of bravery, friendship, and resilience. They represent the countless young men who sacrificed their youth and innocence on the battlefield. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of their loved ones and serves as a reminder of the true cost of war.
Today, as we reflect on the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought in wars, let us remember John and Robert. Their story serves as a testament to the human spirit and the bonds that can be formed even in the most challenging of circumstances.
May we never forget the Two American Boys In The French War Trenches, who stood tall amidst chaos and remained steadfast in their pursuit of peace.

Published originally in 1916, this novel written for young adults is the second in a trilogy (the first being “Two American Boys with the Allied Armies,” also ePublished by Travelyn Publishing) about two American boys searching for an estranged brother in war-torn Europe during World War I—the “Great War”—the story in some respects presaging the World War II story “Saving Private Ryan.” In this case, a Chicago father is grief-stricken at discovering he had years before falsely accused his older son of a crime, causing him to leave home and never come back. The father learns this prodigal son is now fighting with the British somewhere in Europe, and the younger son with his cousin is sent across the Atlantic to find and bring home the older brother, for a long-overdue reconciliation with his father.
Preparing old books for digital publication is a labor of love at Travelyn Publishing. We hold our digital versions of public domain books up against any others with no fear of the comparison. Our conversion work is meticulous, utilizing a process designed to eliminate errors, maximize reader enjoyment, and recreate as much as possible the atmosphere of the original book even as we are adding the navigation and formatting necessary for a good digital book. While remaining faithful to a writer’s original words, and the spellings and usages of his era, we are not above correcting obvious mistakes. If the printer became distracted after placing an ‘a’ at the end of a line and then placed another ‘a’ at the beginning of the next line (they used to do this stuff by hand you know!),what sort of mindless robots would allow that careless error to be preserved for all eternity in the digital version, too? Not us. That’s why we have the audacity to claim that our re-publications are often better than the originals.
