Not only does it save time and frustration for you, but it also ensures the horse's well-being. Step 1: Preparation

Before even attempting to load your horse, it is vital to prepare the environment and yourself. Ensure that the loading area is safe, well-lit, and free from any obstacles. Remove any objects that may distract or scare your horse, such as buckets, wheelbarrows, or loose equipment.

Mentally prepare yourself as well by remaining calm and patient. Horses are incredibly perceptive animals and can pick up on your emotions. If you are anxious or stressed, your horse will sense it and become tense as well. Take a moment to relax and remember that loading your horse is a process that requires time, practice, and understanding.

Step 2: Desensitization and Groundwork

Desensitization is a crucial step in horse loading. Begin by introducing your horse to the trailer without any pressure to enter. Allow them to explore it at their own pace, sniffing, and touching the trailer. This helps to reduce their fear and establishes a positive association with the trailer.

Once your horse is comfortable with the trailer's presence, start incorporating groundwork exercises. Practice leading your horse near the trailer, asking for halts and backing up. This helps establish your leadership and reinforces their obedience. Use positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats or praise, to encourage your horse during this process.

Step 3: Trailer Familiarization

After your horse becomes desensitized and responsive during groundwork, it's time to introduce them to the inside of the trailer. Open all windows and doors to create a well-lit and inviting space. If possible, remove any dividers to provide more room and minimize confinement while your horse gets used to the environment.

Begin by asking your horse to put their front hooves on the trailer ramp or step. Reward them for their effort and gradually ask for more steps until they are comfortable standing halfway in the trailer. Repeat this process until your horse willingly steps inside the trailer without hesitation.

Step 4: Loading Practice

Once your horse is comfortable with standing in the trailer, it's time to practice loading and unloading. Approach the trailer calmly and with confidence. Gently ask your horse to walk forward and step inside, rewarding them for their compliance.

If your horse shows resistance or refuses to load, it's crucial not to force or punish them. Instead, go back to the previous steps and reinforce their confidence through desensitization and groundwork. Remember, patience is key in horse training.

Step 5: Travel Training

Now that your horse is loading and unloading successfully, it's time to simulate the travel experience. Close the trailer doors and allow them to get used to the confined space. Start with short trips around your property, gradually extending the duration.

During travel, drive carefully and avoid sudden movements or fast driving. This ensures your horse's safety and prevents them from developing negative associations with the journey. Reassure your horse with a calm and soothing voice, providing them comfort throughout the ride.

Step 6: Reinforcement and Repetition

Horse training is a continuous process, and reinforcement is crucial. Regularly practice loading and unloading your horse, even when you don't have immediate travel plans. This ensures that they maintain their familiarity and comfort with the trailer.

Be patient and understanding during the repetition process. Each horse is unique, and some may take longer to become fully comfortable with the loading process. Always reward your horse for their efforts and progress, building their confidence and trust in you as their handler.

Loading your horse successfully is an achievable goal with proper training and consistent practice. By following the simple steps outlined in this guide, you can create a positive loading experience for your horse, leading to stress-free travels and a strengthened bond between you and your equine companion.

Remember, always prioritize your horse's safety and well-being throughout the training process. With patience, understanding, and perseverance, you will overcome any challenges and become a skilled horse loader. Get ready to enjoy memorable adventures with your equine partner!

Teach any horse to trailer load willingly when you ask! "Trailer Training Horses: Simple Steps to Loading Your Horse" is a simple, how-to guide that gets your horse trailer-trained for good.

Begging your horse to enter the trailer is aggravating. Forcing your horse into the trailer is dangerous. Unfortunately, you can't just leave the little bugger there at the fairgrounds, so you are stuck. Who needs the aggravation?

The next time you're running late for a show and the kids are driving you nuts and you need to get your horse boxed up and you're running really late... wouldn't you love to have a pro horse trainer show up and show you what to do?

Well, the bad news is, I'll be twenty states away that day. The good news is... you can bring my book! Trailer training is actually very easy - it's just a matter of knowing what steps to take, how long to do each, and what to emphasize. To that end, I've compiled a simple set of instructions, a guidebook to getting your horse loading smoothly using the proven methods of John Lyons.

Train your horse to:
* Load immediately and willingly
* Unload easily and in a controlled manner
* Lead politely

You'll find the book broken down into five "Days" or segments:

- Day 1: Easy trailer loading begins by solidifying great ground manners
-
Day 2: Refine your control over specific body parts, gaining respect along the way, setting yourself up for success
-
Day 3: Two different ways to get your horse into the trailer
-
Day 4: Exercises for "hard-luck" cases, training tips for everybody
-
Day 5: Do's, Don'ts and What-To-Do-Ifs, plus notes on tying, horses that won't unload, horses who "thrash" and more

And... learn to use a round pen to teach your horse to actually look for open trailers! You point, and your horse runs over and hops in!

I call them "days" but you should take this work at your own speed. Each chapter gives you a plan, a goal, theory and homework. Some segments, or "days," will be easier than others. And, while you can breeze through everything in hours, you might want to split it up over days or weeks. It's completely up to you.

Whatcha waiting for? Don't wait till the morning you're leaving to find out if your horse loads!
