When one thinks of Venice, Italy, picturesque canals and gondolas often come to mind. However, there is also a symbol that has represented the city's might, power, and protection for centuries - The Lion of St Mark. This majestic lion statue, with its wings spread wide and a book of gospel beneath its paws, stands as a testament to the rich history and artistic heritage of the Venetian Republic.

The Symbolism behind the Lion of St Mark

The Lion of St Mark is intricately connected to the patron saint of Venice, St Mark the Evangelist. According to legend, St Mark's remains were stolen from Alexandria, Egypt, and brought to Venice in the 9th century. It is believed that an angel appeared to St Mark and proclaimed, "Pax tibi, Marce, evangelista meus" (Peace be with thee, Mark, my Evangelist). This sacred connection between Venice and St Mark led to the lion becoming the emblem of the city.

The lion's wings symbolize the supremacy and dominance of the Venetian Republic. It serves as a visual reminder of Venice's maritime power and the territory it once ruled over. As the Republic expanded its influence throughout the Mediterranean, the Lion of St Mark became a recognizable symbol of authority.

Francis Hammond is an English teenage boy of energy and pluck who lives in Venice with his father. One night
when he is out rowing through the canals, he spots two young ladies being kidnapped. Pulling his boat up
alongside theirs, he manages to rescue the sisters from their attackers. The danger is not over, however, as the
villain is determined to succeed. But who is this villain and does he have spies watching the girls’ every move?
Follow Francis through his many adventures in Venice and later when he sails the Mediterranean Sea and fights
with the Venetian military against Genoa.

Of all the chapters of history there are few more interesting or wonderful than that which tells the story of the rise
and progress of Venice. Built upon a few sandy islands in a shallow lagoon, and originally founded by fugitives
from the mainland, Venice became one of the greatest and most respected powers of Europe. Henty writes his
story in a time not of the triumphs of Venice, but of her hardest struggle for existence — when she defended
herself against the coalition of Hungary, Padua, and Genoa, — for never at any time were the virtues of Venice,
her steadfastness, her patriotism, and her willingness to make all sacrifice for her independence more brilliantly
shown.
