Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) was a Norwegian writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. Her most famous work is the trilogy “Kristin Lavransdatter” about life in Norway during the middle ages. First published in 1927, “The Cross” is the third in the trilogy and the final chapter in the story of strong-willed heroine Kristin and her attempt to rebuild her life in the wake of the Black Death.
