From basic Finger Drills suitable for the first day of Theory Class to two-handed finger-twisting drills that professional stenographers will find extremely challenging, this book will give you the machine shorthand workout that you need. It is 143 pages of steno drill after steno drill, all designed to get you stroking strong, clear, and confident. Master your keyboard, and you will find that speedbuilding is much easier. Each chapter focuses on a specific part of the steno keyboard. The easiest drills are in the first part of the book. The drills become progressively harder as you work your way through the chapters. The final nine chapters contain drills for both hands at once. There are three basic types of Finger Drills used in this book. Familiarity Drills are large tables with one key, letter, or combination in each cell of the table. Each cell is one stroke. There is one Familiarity Drill in each chapter, except for the Dexterity Drill chapters. Each drill takes up an entire page. Rhythm and Speed Drills are three- or four-stroke drills that you repeat over and over. Each chapter, except for the Dexterity Drills, contains over 20 Rhythm and Speed Drills. They look like this: S H K P Each letter is a separate stroke. S is the first stroke. H is the second. K is the third. P is the fourth. Work on one drill at a time until you achieve an acceptable level of rhythm and clarity. The third type of drill are the Dexterity Drills. Each Dexterity Drill chapter has over 20 separate drills. They look like this: FBGT RPLS Dexterity Drills are two-stroke drills. In this example, the first stroke requires the first and fourth fingers to stretch up for the F and the T while the two middle fingers reach down for the B and the G. The second stroke is the exact opposite. Not all Dexterity Drills are exact opposites, but they are designed to be “finger twisters.” All Dexterity Drills are designed to improve muscle coordination.
