Saving The Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad: A Journey through History
The Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad winds its way through the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado and New Mexico, offering a mesmerizing journey through time. This historic narrow gauge railway, with its well-preserved tracks and vintage steam locomotives, captures the essence of an era long gone. However, today, this iconic treasure faces numerous challenges that threaten its existence.
The History of the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad
Constructed in the late 19th century, the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad served as a vital link for mining and regional commerce, connecting the towns of Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. Its tracks cut through rugged mountains, deep canyons, and sweeping valleys, providing a lifeline for the communities it served.
The railroad transported valuable commodities such as timber, coal, and ore, enabling a flourishing economy in the region. It played a pivotal role in the development of the Southwest, facilitating trade, and connecting isolated communities. Its narrow gauge system allowed it to reach remote areas that standard gauge railways couldn't access.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has operated for more than three decades as a tourist ride over the breathtaking Cumbres Pass, ten thousand feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. The sixty-four miles of the former San Juan Extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway were saved twice by volunteers from the railroad graveyard. In 1970, the States of Colorado and New Mexico bought the railroad, which runs from Chama, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, to Antonito, Conejos County, Colorado. New Mexico historian and C&TSRR commissioner and spokesman Spencer Wilson offers an insiders account of this triumphant tale of historical preservationists succeeding on an impressive scale.
