Have you ever wondered how a tracker can decipher the trails and signs left behind by man or beast? In this ultimate guide, we will explore the intricate world of tracking and reveal the secrets behind becoming a proficient tracker.

The Science Behind Tracking

Tracking involves observing and interpreting the various signs and clues that individuals or animals leave behind as they move through their environment. Modern tracking techniques have evolved with the aid of technology, such as GPS and satellite imagery. However, traditional tracking methods remain relevant and continue to be honed by dedicated trackers worldwide.

Tracking Man

Tracking human beings requires a different set of skills compared to tracking animals. In criminal investigations, trackers play a crucial role in deciphering clues left at crime scenes. They meticulously analyze footprints, tire tracks, fingerprints, and other evidence left behind to determine the movements and identities of individuals involved.

For search and rescue operations, trackers are essential in locating missing persons in vast wilderness areas. By following the signs left behind, they can determine the direction of travel and prioritize the search efforts.

Exploring the techniques and tools used by modern-day trackers, this guide will unveil the art of tracking man in various scenarios and highlight the importance of this skill in solving crimes and saving lives.

Tracking Beast

Animals leave behind a trail of clues that can tell a captivating story about their behavior, migration patterns, and interactions with other species. Tracking animals is not only a pursuit for biologists and conservationists but also for nature enthusiasts who yearn to deeply connect with the natural world.

Whether you're an amateur wildlife photographer or someone who simply loves exploring the outdoors, learning the art of tracking animals can enhance your experience and enable you to witness rare moments. By understanding their tracks, scat, territorial markings, and feeding patterns, you can gain crucial insights into their lives.

Becoming a Tracker

Becoming a proficient tracker requires a blend of knowledge, observation skills, and intuition. Patience and perseverance are key virtues to develop, as tracking often entails following subtle signs for long periods, sometimes in challenging terrains.

Throughout this guide, we will delve into the essential techniques, such as track interpretation, gait analysis, and sign identification. We will also discuss the benefits of learning tracking skills, including increased awareness, connection to nature, and even potential career opportunities.

Tracking is not just a skill from the past but a valuable tool for both wildlife enthusiasts and professionals alike. The ability to read the stories written in the dirt and decipher the movements of individuals or animals opens up a world of understanding and connection with our surroundings.

Whether you aspire to become a master tracker or simply want to gain a deeper appreciation for the unique language of tracks, this ultimate guide will set you on the path to becoming a skilled tracker. So, grab your walking boots and embark on a journey into the world of tracking man or beast.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Terry Grant was the face of the hit television show Mantracker for six seasons. Raised in Ontario, Terry headed west as soon as he got his driver’s licence and worked as a cowboy for legendary Alberta ranches like the Bar-U and the OH for close to 25 years. While in Alberta, he honed his animal tracking skills as a cowboy, hunter, guide, and outfitter. Terry is a seasoned Search and Rescue professional, having worked with the Foothills, Alberta Search and Rescue Team for more than 12 years. His reputation as a tracker impressed the British military, which enlisted his expertise to help soldiers identify hidden improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Calgary made him a “white hatter” in 2011, and Terry continues to volunteer at the Calgary Stampede annually. He lives near High River, Alberta and when he’s not on the back of his horse, Terry can be found in his shop working on his custom carpentry, out on the golf course, or playing with his border collies. In addition to this book, Terry offers courses for those interested in the art of tracking. See www.trackingwithterry.com.
