World War I was a tumultuous time that saw the rise and fall of many nations, but it also gave birth to heroes whose stories have been forgotten over time. Among these unsung heroes were the men who served in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions of The King's Liverpool Regiment. Their unwavering bravery and sacrifice deserve to be remembered, as they played a crucial role in shaping history.

The 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions were formed in response to the overwhelming demand for soldiers during the Great War. Many young men eagerly enlisted in these battalions, driven by a sense of duty and patriotism. Their journey began in Liverpool, where they trained tirelessly, preparing themselves physically and mentally for the horrors of war.

The battalions were deployed to various fronts, with a significant number serving in France and Belgium. These young men experienced the harsh realities of trench warfare, enduring relentless attacks, heavy shelling, and the constant threat of death. They displayed incredible resilience and determination, refusing to yield to the enemy despite unimaginable hardships.

One of the defining moments for these battalions was the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions were among the thousands of troops who fought tirelessly to make progress on this blood-soaked battlefield. They faced unimaginable horrors, with casualties mounting every hour. Nevertheless, they pressed forward, inch by inch, displaying an unparalleled sense of camaraderie and dedication to their fellow soldiers.

As the war dragged on, the battalions faced increasing challenges. The devastating loss of lives became a common occurrence, leaving survivors scarred physically and emotionally. Despite these hardships, the men never wavered in their resolve to protect their homeland and their comrades. Their unwavering commitment to their cause was an inspiration to all who witnessed their sacrifices.

Throughout the course of the war, many soldiers from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions were awarded medals and commendations for their bravery and valor. Their acts of heroism ranged from rescuing wounded comrades under heavy fire to single-handedly capturing enemy positions. These accolades, although they cannot fully measure the extent of their sacrifice, serve as a testament to their unwavering courage.

As the war came to an end in 1918, the surviving members of the battalions returned home to Liverpool. They were greeted as heroes by their families, friends, and fellow citizens who recognized the magnitude of their sacrifice. However, for many, the physical and emotional scars of war would remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, the stories of these brave men have largely been forgotten over time. Their sacrifices and contributions to the war effort deserve to be remembered and honored. By shedding light on the experiences of the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions of The King's Liverpool Regiment, we can pay tribute to these forgotten heroes and ensure their memory lives on.

Liverpool Pals, is a record of duty, courage and endeavour of a group of men who, before war broke out in 1914, were the backbone of Liverpool's commerce. Fired with patriotism, over 4,000 of these businessmen volunteered in 1914 and were formed into the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th (Service) Battalions of the King's (Liverpool Regiment); they were the first of all the Pals battalions to be raised, and they were the last to be stood down. It is commonly held that the North of England's Pals battalions were wiped out on the 1st July, 1916, certainly this befell a number of units, but the Liverpool Pals took all their objectives on that day. From then on they fought all through the Somme Battle, The Battle of Arras and the muddy hell of Passchendaele in 1917, and the desperate defence against the German offensive of March 1918.
