A Brief Biography and First Day in an Actor's Life and Last Day in an Actor's Life are the result of the close relationship the author had with Laughton as they created the anthology about America, The Fabulous Country and the Carolinian dialect for the role of Senator Cooley. During the seven-day work weeks at the Laughton main residence in Hollywood, the beach home in Santa Monica, and the farm-house in Palos Verdes, the author was drawn into the intimate experiences of Laughton and his wife Elsa Lanchester. Accompanying the actor to Washington for the filming on location of Advise and Consent, proved to be a once-in-a-lifetime exhilaration. The actor's artistic drive and momentum deteriorated proportionately with his struggle to overcome terminal cancer. Anguished by the fear that his artistic legacy would decay along with the massive celluloid collection that documented his career, he revealed to the author his youthful pain when he was forced to hide his unconventional sexual drives from a xenophobic Victorian climate. Daily whippings by an intolerant Jesuit priest and his mother's decision to banish him to London taught Laughton the emotion of hate that he used to characterize Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty. Drafted as a foot soldier, Laughton was gassed in France, leaving his trachea permanently damaged. Despite these trials his early determination to become a well trained, dynamic actor prevailed throughout his life.
